What is a Gristmill??

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A gristmill or grist mill is a building in which grain is ground into flour, or the grinding mechanism itself.
In many countries these are referred to as corn mills or flour mills.

The Gristmill described on this page is a Corn Gristmill setup by my father Willard Schubert
and my Grandfather James ( JIMMY ) Houston Schubert about 20 years ago and it still works like a gem!!

This setup uses a 15 horse power 1922 Fairbanks Morse Z -  Hit N Miss Gasoline Engine and a J.B. Deeds & Son Grist mill connected
together by a driving belt.

Complete GristMill Setup

The Gristmill contains two Millstones - one of which is stationary and the other is turned by the Fairbanks engine.
Here is a closeup of what a millstone looks like.

The top of the grist mill has a hopper where shelled corn is stored and is gravity fed into the Gristmill.

The corn then falls between the two mill stones and it ground up and exits the left is where it is deposited onto the shaker / sieve. The
Cornmeal exits out of the botton of the shaker pan and the rough corn and husks fall off of the end of the shaker.
